Even though the state football playoffs have to still play out, winter sports in Nevada are now under way for respective high schools.
The Battle Mountain High School wrestling team will be looking to win its fourth consecutive Division III state championship in February. If the Longhorns can accomplish that feat, they would tie Lowry for the most state championships in state history with 16.
Battle Mountain begins its season with the Bucks Bag Invitational in Idaho on Dec. 3-4. The Longhorns will wrestle on their home mat on Tuesday, Dec. 8, against Elko.
Battle Mountain will make trips to Winnemucca, Lovelock and Reno to close out December. The Longhorns will compete at the Sierra Nevada Classic and Reno Tournament of Champions.
As the calendar turns to January, Battle Mountain travels to Buhl, Idaho, on Jan. 8-9 for the Buhl Invitational. The Longhorns will take part in the Kiwanis Invitational in Spring Creek and the Vaquero Invitational in Fernley, before hosting their own tournament on Jan. 29-30.
The league duals take place on Feb. 5-6, the regional championship is set for Feb. 12-13, and the state championships will be in Primm on Saturday, Feb. 20.
The Battle Mountain boys basketball team opens the season with tournaments in Hawthorne and Virginia City. At the Serpent Classic from Dec. 3-5, the Longhorns are scheduled to play Pahrump Valley, Mineral County, Spring Mountain and White Pine. Battle Mountain is scheduled to face McDermitt, Wells, Virginia City and Eureka, from Dec. 10-12.
The Longhorns make their home debut on Tuesday, Dec. 15, against Wells in a non-conference game. Division III North play starts just a couple days later with a road trip to Lake Tahoe to play North Tahoe on Dec. 18 and Incline on Dec. 19.
The regular season concludes with a pair of home games against Silver Stage (Feb. 12) and Pershing County (Feb. 13). The regional championships take place Feb. 19-20, and the state championships are Feb. 26-27 in Reno at high schools and Lawlor Events Center.
The Battle Mountain girls basketball team opens with the same two tournaments in Hawthorne and Virginia City, with eight games in the preseason.
In between the two tournaments, the Lady Longhorns will make their home debut on Tuesday, Dec. 8, against Wells at 5 p.m. Battle Mountain will make the return trip to Wells on Dec. 15, and heads to Lake Tahoe to open the Division III slate against North Tahoe and Incline.
The first home games in league play are against West Wendover on Jan. 2, and Yerington on Jan. 8.
As it is with the boys, the regional championships are Feb. 19-20 and the state championships are in Reno Feb. 26-27.
