The last time a junior varsity football team went undefeated at Battle Mountain High School, not one of the current players was born. One would have to go back to the 1990s to see the last time that feat happened, until last week.
The Longhorns closed out a perfect 9-0 season on Wednesday, Oct. 28, with a 63-6 rout of West Wendover’s varsity squad. Battle Mountain had a number of big wins on the season, including over the Elko and Spring Creek JV teams, American Falls, Idaho, and two victories over Pershing County.
Battle Mountain scored five touchdowns and raced out to a 35-0 advantage in the first quarter and never looked back. The Longhorns increased the advantage to 43-0 at halftime, with a touchdown and 2-point conversion.
The rout continued, as Battle Mountain added two touchdowns in the third quarter to lead 57-6, and the remainder of the contest was played with a running clock. Battle Mountain added a final touchdown in the fourth quarter to account for the final score.
