Humboldt County’s Cade Bell and Julianne Montero have qualified for the National Junior High School Rodeo Finals, to be held June 21-27 in Des Moines, Iowa.

The duo will be traveling with the rest of the Nevada contingent to compete in the 11th annual event.

Montero qualified in barrel racing and goat tying. Montero claimed the state crown in goat tying and she was fourth in barrel racing.

Bell will be busy as he qualified in all six of his events including goat tying, breakaway roping, chute dogging, saddle bronc, team roping and ribbon roping.

Bell finished second in team roping with Jayden Jensen, second in saddle bronc, third in goat tying and he was fourth in breakaway roping, chute dogging and fourth in ribbon roping with Emma Lemaire.

Featuring roughly 1,000 contestants from 42 states, five Canadian provinces and Australia, the NJHFR is the world’s largest junior high rodeo.

In addition to competing for more than $75,000 in prizes, NJHFR contestants will also be vying for more than $100,000 in college scholarships and the chance to be named a National Junior High School Rodeo champion.

To earn this title, contestants must finish in the top 20 based on their combined times/scores in the first two rounds to advance the final round on the last day of the event.

National champions will then be determined based on their three-round combined times/scores.

Again this year, the championship performance will be televised nationally as part of the Cinch Highschool Rodeo Tour telecast on RFD-TV.

Live broadcasts of each performance will air online at HHSRATV.com. Performance times are 5 p.m. on June 21 and 7 a.m. and 5 p.m. each day thereafter.

Along with great rodeo competition and the chance to meet new friends from around the world, contestants have the opportunity to enjoy shooting sports, volleyball, tug-of-war, dances, family-oriented activities, church services sponsored by the Fellowship of Christian Cowboys, shopping at the trade show and visiting area attractions as Des Moines hosts the event for the second time.
