Potter wins shot put for Battle Mountain at state championships

LAS VEGAS — Battle Mountain High School junior DJ Potter paced the field in the Division III shot put standings this past weekend at the NIAA State Track and Field Championships at Del Sol High School in Las Vegas.

Potter’s best throw of the event was 43 feet, .75 inches, while The Meadows’ Shahraiz was second at 41-9.25. Agassi Prep’s Zachary Robertson was third at 41-9 and Yerington’s Sam Hammond (41-2.50) was fourth.

Potter added a fourth-place finish in the discus, with a best toss of 119-9. Hammond easily outdistanced the field with a throw of 142-5. Robertson finished second with a throw of 127-11 and West Wendover’s Jaxson Carter placed fourth at 123-8.

Blake Dorian and Andrew Cox finished second and fourth, respectively, in the triple jump. Dorian battled Pershing County’s Marcus Nester for the top spot, but came up inches short at 41-5. Nester won with a leap of 42-10.25. Cox’s best jump was 38-7.50.

In addition, Cox was fifth in the 400 meters with a time of 54.42 seconds. North Tahoe’s Max Burkhart won the race with a time of 52.79 and Silver Springs’ Brad Douthitt at 53.56.

Marco Vallejo posted two top six finishes in the throwing events. The junior was fifth in the shot put at 39-0.75 and sixth in the discus with a throw of 112-8.

Regan Knight finished sixth in the high jump, clearing the bar at 5-2. Calvary Chapel’s Noah Frizzell won at 5-10. Pershing County’s Marcus Nester also had a height of 5-11 but had more misses. Incline’s Blake Perry and The Meadows’ Max Hisatake (5-6) tied for third.

Senior Justin Berumen was seventh in the 110-meter hurdles. Agassi prep’s Tyler Overton won the race at 16.44 and White Pine’s Nathaniel Lee was second at 16.65.

The Battle Mountain boys finished seventh as a team with 52 points. Yerington won the state championship with 93 points and North Tahoe was second at 73. Agassi Prep (71), The Meadows (67.50) and White Pine (65) rounded out the top five.

Wayne Piramide provided the best finish for the Lady Longhorns, finishing sixth in the triple jump. The senior posted a jump of 21-5.75.

White Pine had the top four finishers in the event. Mikinley Prengel won with a throw of 34-1.75. Jenna Gubler was second at 33-4.75.

Cecila Leon finished seventh in the 1,600 meters with a time of 6:20.08. The Meadows’ Jeneke Heerema won the race with a time of 5:21.20 and North Tahoe’s Tara Gallant was second at 5:27.31.

In addition, Leon placed eighth in the 800 meters in a time of 2:40.27. The Meadows’ Ellen Hirsberg won with a time of 2:24.48, while Heerema was second at 2:25.96.

Maddie Wahrenburg finished seventh in the 3,200 meters in a time of 15:20.66. Gallant (11:47.32) won the race and state championship.

Dayana Rodriguez was seventh in the 300-meter hurdles in a time of 54.79. Incline’s Valeri Nix won the race at 47.87 and Calvary Chapel’s Shelbu Byrnes was second at 47.94.

The Lady Longhorns were 11th in the team standings with 19 points. White Pine claimed the state title with 151 points and The Meadows was second with 147 points. North Tahoe (101), Yerington (59) and Calvary Chapel (56) were third, fourth and fifth, respectively.
