Austin’s Young finishes fourth in triple jump at Division IV state championships

Junior also places fifth in high jump

LAS VEGAS — Austin High School’s Emily Young turned in two top five finishes at last weekend’s NIAA State Track and Field Championships at Del Sol High School in Las Vegas.

Young placed fourth in the triple jump with a best leap of 29 feet, 7.50 inches. Smith Valley’s Kellie Rogaczewski won the event with a jump of 33-0. Sierra Lutheran’s Grace Bonafede (32-4.75) and Cali Benton (32-4) were second and third, respectively.

In addition, Young was fifth in the high jump, clearing 4-2. Rogaczewski also won that event with a mark of 4-10. Sierra Lutheran’s Abby Ferenz tied with McDermitt’s Draunidalo for second. Indian Springs’ Loren McClary was fourth at 4-4.

The Fillies were 15th with nine points. Sierra Lutheran won the team champion with 168.50 points and Smith Valley was second at 103. Eureka (64), Wells (58.50) and Sage Ridge (52) rounded out the top five.

Spring Mountain claimed the boys title as well with 137 points. Sierra Lutheran was was second at 108 and Tonopah (89) was third. Excel Christian (62) and Beatty (49) completed the top five.
