Winnemucca cowboy Trenten Montero took home the top spot in Wednesday’s performance of the bareback riding at the Reno Rodeo with a score of 80 points to top the strong field of professionals.
Montero made his ride on Shade of Grey. Seth Hardwick of Laramie, Wyo., was second at 78, and Clint Cannon of Waller, Texas, and Even Jayne, of Marseille, France, tied for third with 77 points apiece.
Montero had a score of 74 points on Tuesday night, which should qualify him for the short go-around on Saturday. Montero is currently tied for seventh in the standings.
If he makes it, Montero would have a chance to win the Silver Spurs in bareback since Elko’s Paul Jones did it in 2002. Montero was 10 when Jones won the bareback.
Montero is a Lowry High School graduate and a former member of the Humboldt County Rodeo Club. Montero graduated from New Mexico State University and was a frequent qualfier for the College National Finals Rodeo. He turned pro in 2013 and is competing in his first Reno Rodeo.
