Dan and Eddyann Filippini, of Battle Mountain, are grateful to Nevada BLM leadership for partnering to settle a long-standing dispute between the Filippinis and the Battle Mountain District Office about responsible management of their grazing allotments. The Filippini’s are fifth generation ranchers with family members raising cattle in northern and central Nevada since 1870’s. Ranching is at the core of who they are, and is an important part of the culture and history of Nevada. They are relieved to have reached an agreement which allows them to turn out their cattle this season. The reality is that this went forward because of some great people at BLM taking a stand with us and doing the right thing.
According to Eddyann Filippini: “BLM is obligated to manage the land under its care for a healthy environment. It is also obligated to respect ranching as one of the congressionally mandated uses of our public lands. So long as facts and science, and not personal agendas, drive BLM management decisions, we and the entire ranching community in the West will be able to work in partnership with the BLM to manage our beautiful western land for its resource values and for the men and women who make a living from the land.”
Dan explains that BLM leadership was able to look at the facts on the ground and reach balanced conclusions about managing grazing and natural resources. “Our cows needed to be turned out a long time ago. We are thankful common sense finally prevailed in our situation.”
