Battle Mountain’s Potter attends combines in offseason

Battle Mountain’s DJ Potter has been hard at work at a number of off-season combines throughout the country.

He received a letter in late February regarding him being nominated to attend a Blue-Grey regional combine event. There were 18 regional combines starting in December and ending in May.

Potter and teammate Cooper Burkhart decided to attend the one in Sioux Falls, S.D., May 3. After both of them raised some funds with a lift-a-thon, they spent a weekend traveling to the Northern Regional Combine at Augustana College.

As part of the combine, Potter ran the 40-yard dash in 5.05 seconds, bench pressed 185 pounds, 14 times, had a shuttle time of 4.69 seconds and he had a broad jump of 6 feet, 11 inches.

Potter then spent some time participating in various drills before heading home. Potter thought he was done with the combines, finishing up his track season with a state championship in the shot put and perfect attendance in school.

On June 4, Potter received another letter in the mail. Due to his efforts in Sioux Falls, he was chosen to participate in one of five super combines over the summer. He chose to compete at the super combine in San Mateo, Calif., on June 11-12.

Potter will be a senior at BMHS this fall. He was been playing football since the age of 7, starting on the Seahawks flag football team. Last season DJ had playing time at both center and the defensive line.

He was a second-team all-league defensive lineman this past season, he caused one fumble, 1 pass defended, one sack and 29 tackles (15 solo).
