Obituary: Maud Caravan

In Loving Memory

Maud Caravan, 85, passed away on June 19, 2015 at Humboldt General Hospital, surrounded by her family after battling cancer.

Maud was born November 18, 1929 to Ben and Mary Cooper in Deer Lake, Newfoundland, Canada. Maud grew up in Deer Lake, where she met and married her husband, Walter and gave birth to their daughter, Judy. In 1957, the family set out for Nevada to join other family members. They lived in Dayton, Empire, Battle Mountain and finally Winnemucca.

While in Battle Mountain, Maud was primarily a stay at home mom but worked at the Kwik Drive Inn during the summer. After their daughter married and left home, Maud and Walt moved to Winnemucca. Walt passed away in 1982. After Walt’s passing and before her retirement, Maud worked at the Winner’s Casino signing people up for the Mother’s Day, Father’s Day and Hunter’s drawings.

In 1987, Maud met Frank Ballew who became her best friend and companion. Frank passed away in 2000.

Maud loved her yard, fishing, traveling, being with family, playing her favorite “Game Maker” slot machine at the Sundance Casino and visiting with the staff there. Maud was a quick-witted and compassionate woman. She touched the hearts of many people. Maud will be greatly missed and will be laid to rest in the Winnemucca cemetery next to her husband.

Maud was preceded in death by her parents, Ben and Mary, brothers Raymond and Norman, husband Walter, and her longtime companion, Frank.
