DENIO — For 52 years running, the small community of Denio has held the Denio Barbecue and Play Day on the first Saturday of June. The venue includes a team branding, team roping, and kids’ Jr. Rodeo held at the Denio Arena.
In the arena events this year, the team branding winners were Frankie Bengoa, Will DeLong, Lucas Williams and D.W. Foster. The junior branding was won by Bryce Otley, Joel Otley, Marvin Casey and Dan Otley. Rusty Bengoa and Hyland Wilkinson topped the team roping.
The kids events and junior rodeo feature five different age groups with activities for children ages 0 to 15. Along with sheep riding, stick horse barrels, barrel racing and dummy roping, children participate in more non-traditional events such as the potato race, figure eight, goat un-decorating, and many more.
Every child who took part received prizes provided by the generous support and donations of numerous sponsors. The all-around winners for the kids events included: Eliza Weagant, Alex Williams, MattieRose Johnson, Lexi Garijo, Jace Grenke and Layton Johnson. Williams and MattieRose Johnson were named high-point cowboy and cowgirl.
