High school finals rodeo to take place this weekend in Ely

A strong contingent of Humboldt County athletes will be in Ely this weekend as the Nevada State High School Rodeo Association Finals get underway at the White Pine County Fairgrounds.

The first performance of the rodeo occurs Saturday morning at 11 a.m. The second performance is 11 a.m. Sunday and the short go will take place on Monday at 11 a.m.

Going into the state finals, Humboldt County’s Shaun Mentaberry leads the saddle bronc riding with 103 points and appears to have a lock at advancing to the national finals. Seth Duncan finds himself in second place in bareback roping with 20 points. Luke Logan is third in saddle bronc with 60 points and fifth in the tie-down roping standings with 86 points and just five points out of fourth.

Trase Bell is ninth in the tie-down standings and his brother Quint Bell is 15th.

Quint Bell and Trase Bell are fifth and sixth, respectively, in steer wrestling. Quint Bell has 46 points and is 16 points out of fourth place. The brothers are also inside the top 10 in team roping.

Humboldt County’s Chris Gleason sits in fifth place in the bull riding standings and Dawson Cassinelli and Ty Mehiel are ninth and 10th in the event.

Logan is 10th in the boys all-around standings and Quint Bell is 11th. Fallon’s Cord Hendrix leads the all-around standings, while Wells’ Daniel Eary is second.

On the girls side, Dusty Robertson is 18th in goat tying and Danyelle Brown is 20th and Hayley Hall is 23rd. Kerstin Christiansen sits in 20th in the barrel racing standings and is 24th in pole bending and Shaylee Robertson is 22nd in breakaway roping.

Battle Mountain’s Dally Goemmer leads the girls all-around standings, while Las Vegas’ Makenah Faircolth and Hayley Dalton-Estes are second and third, respectively.

The top four finishers in their respective events after the state finals, in the year-end standings, advance to the National High School Finals Rodeo July 12 — 18 at the Sweetwater Events Complex in Rock Springs, Wyo.

The athletes that place fifth through 15th in the season-ending points in their events advance to the Silver State International Rodeo to take place at the Winnemucca Events Complex June 30 — July 5.
