HCSO looking for search and rescue volunteers

Do you have the urge to be awakened in the middle of the night to a recorded voice instructing you to report to the county dispatch building within the next hour? Also, this voice says bring stuff so you can survive anywhere in Humboldt County for 48 hours without any outside assistance and do it in any weather conditions. And, you now know there is a uniform requirement which you were previously told to purchase at your own expense along with all that survival stuff.

You can tell your family where you are going, “kinda,” but you won’t know how long you will be gone. It is one of those “it depends” sort of thing.

Now rush to the county dispatch building to meet with other drowsy, still slightly confused like minded individuals to get a briefing on the mission ahead. There you will be reminded to fill the gas tank in your vehicle because where you are going there won’t be any stations for many, many miles. Another cost out of pocket.

You may be required to work many hours past a normal overtime shift, but not to worry — you were never going to be paid anyway.

If these job conditions appeal to you, there are still openings in the Humboldt County Search and Rescue Unit for volunteer searchers. Applications are available at the Sheriff’s office front desk.

The job pay is the pits, but the rewards are off the chart when you are able to locate someone’s missing family member and get them home safely.
