A handful of athletes from Lowry High School traveled to Reno on Friday, May 29, to compete in the Northern Nevada Weightlifting Championships at Reno High School.

They competed with schools from Reno, Carson, Reed, McQueen, Spanish Springs, Wooster and Fernley.

Shelby McKinnon led the way for the Lowry girls with the highest total in the lower division with 565 pounds. She was also first in exponent at 4.08. McKinnon squatted 245 pounds, which was second in the female lower division. She was tops in bench at 145 pounds and clean at 175 pounds.

“Shelby was a four-time power clean, total weight and pound-for-pound

best female lifter,” said Lowry weights teacher and coach Taua Cabatbat.

Caitlynn Cooper led the way in the middle division of the female class. She was first in overall weight total at 525 pounds and in exponent at 3.65. Cooper had the best mark in clean by 40 pounds with a lift of 525 pounds. She was second in squat (225) and she benched 130 pounds.

Whitney Willey was second in the middle division, lifting a total of 50-5 pounds, with an exponent of 3.21. She bested the field in the squat with 235 pounds and the bench press at 140 pounds. Her lift in the clean was 130 pounds.

Jasmine Marchand was third in exponent in the upper division at 2.86. The senior squatted 210 pounds, cleaned 145 pounds and benched 120 for a total of 475.

Hayley Hall was fourth in exponent at 3.53 and lifted a total of 455 pounds. She had a squat of 200 pounds, a bench of 115 and a clean of 140. Julia Laird was sixth in exponent in the lower division at 3.44. She had a total of 460 pounds, including 205 (squat), 120 (bench) and 135 (clean).

“Julia and Whitney were two freshman that also put on a good showing,” Cabatbat said.

On the boys side, Jose Ruiz was second in exponent in the 205 pound division at 4.77. He also lifted the second most weight at 980 pounds. He was first in the squat at 445 pounds and the bench at 295 pounds, He had a clean of 240 pounds. Felipe Moreno was fourth in exponent in the 225-pound division. He lifted the second-most weight at 1,015 pounds. He had lifts of 460 (bench), 280 (bench) and 275 (clean).

Ignacio Medina placed third in exponent in the 145-pound class at 5.10 and was fourth with a total of 665 pounds. He had a squat of 245 pounds, a bench of 220 and a clean of 200.

Beau Billingsley was fifth in exponent in the 185-pound class at 5.13 and Caleb Ahnefeld tied for seventh at 4.76. Billingsley had marks of 405 (bench), 265 (squat) and 265 (clean) and Ahnefeld lifted 325 (squat), 290 (bench) and 235 (clean).

Lowry had four competitors in the 205-pound weight class, with Donovan Brumm second in exponent at 4.89. He lifted a total of 955 pounds, including 410 in the squat, 275 in the clean and 255 in the bench. Kelvin Meza was right behind with a total of 925 pound, including 415 (squat), 270 (bench) and 240 (clean). Jose Bernal did not have a lift in the squat but benched 290 pounds and had a clean of 225 pounds.

Luis Cardenas placed sixth in exponent at 3.48 in the heavyweight class. He had a total of 995 pound, including 430 (squat), 305 (bench) and 260 (clean).

“The boys did really well, they put on a good showing,” Cabatbat said. “They could not do much because majority of them were in the same weight division but they competed. We had 15 total weightlifters all six girls medaled and five out of the nine boys medaled as well.”
