Mentaberry finishes ninth in saddle bronc at National High School Finals Rodeo

Shaun Mentaberry turned in a ninth-place finish at the National High School Finals Rodeo that concluded this past Saturday in Rock Springs Wyo.

Mentaberry was 28th after the first go-around that concluded last Wednesday morning and he completed his second ride last Thursday morning with a score of 56 points to finish fourth in the performance and 19th in the go-around.

Mentaberry, who was second in the Nevada saddle bronc standings, advanced to the short go-around on Saturday. He made the full eight seconds to score 52 points and finish 11th in the go-around. Mentaberry totaled 147 points to finish ninth overall.

Luke Logan competed for Humboldt County in the saddle bronc and recorded no scores in each of his two performances. In addition, Logan competed in tie-down roping where he finished 28th overall, with a combined time of 26.7 seconds. He had runs of 14.3 and 12.4 seconds in his individual performances.

Quint Bell took part in the steer wrestling and recorded no times in each performance. Seth Duncan competed in bareback riding and did not stay on his horse for the full eight seconds in each performance.

Clay Stremler rode as an independent in saddle bronc. The Nevada state champion in the event, was seventh after the first go-around was complete, but he did not stay for the full eight second sin the second go-around and finished 21st with 66 points.

Ladd King, of Kaysville, Utah, was the all-around cowboy with 960. J.D. Reed of Spearman Texas, was second at 800 and Ethan Price, of Leedy, Okla., was third at 710.

Kaytlyn Miller, of Dammeron Valley, Utah, was crowned the all-around cowgirl with 1,600 points. Kelly Valdez, of La Junta, Colo., was second at 1,065. Jayde Atkins, of Broken Bow, Neb., was third at 795.

Daylon Swearingen, of Piffard, N.Y., was named the rookie cowboy with 530 points and Miller was the rookie cowgirl. Battle Mountain’s Dally Goemmer was third in the rookie cowgirl standings with 400 points.

The individual national champions included Brian Brown, La Barge, Wyo., (bareback riding), Miller, Dammeron Valley, Utah, (breakaway roping), Mia Manzanares, Opelousas, La., (goat tying), Colton Kofoed, Bear River, Wyo., (tie-down roping), Ryder Wright, Milford, Utah, (saddle bronc), Gabe Soileau, Bunkie, La., (steer wrestling), Avery Weatherman, Balmorhea, Texas, (pole bending), Garrett McDonald, DeFuniak Springs, Fla./Luke Taylor, Kinston, Ala., (team roping), Ali Armstrong, Lexington, Okla., (barrel racing), Wyatt Covington, Omak, Wash., (bull riding), Jack Jaros, St. Charles, Iowa, (Boys cutting) and Sidney Amos, Loma, Colo., (girls cutting).

Utah won the team championship with 10,526.66 points. Texas was second and Louisiana was third. Nevada finished 15th with 2.849.28 points.
