Powell wins title at Mustang Invitational

The Battle Mountain High School wrestling team split up its team last weekend, sending as group to the Reno Tournament of Champions and to the Mustang Invitational in Lovelock.

The Longhorns DeAndre Powell captured the 120-pound title in Lovelock, with three wins on Saturday. After an opening-round bye, Powell earned a 6-3 decision over Spring Creek’s Christian Courtney.

Powell made his way to the final win a win by pin over Silver Stage’s Trevor Martin in the semifinals, and he won his title by pinning Miguel Tejada 17 seconds into the second period.

Brandon Stallard (126), Deagan McClary (138), Christian Nevarez (145), Fernando Carrillo (152) and Tristen Cordingley (195) also wrestled for the Longhorns but did not place.

Battle Mountain finished 11th as a team with 41.50 points. Lowry ran away with the team championship with 269 points.

Fernley was second at 154 and McQueen (143) was third. Yerington (127) and Sparks (103) rounded out the top five.

Battle Mountain travels to Reno next week for the Sierra Nevada Classic.
