Lady Longhorns split a pair of games to open league play

BMHS back in action on Jan. 2

The Battle Mountain High School girls basketball team made the long trek to Lake Tahoe this past weekend to play in the Division III North and split a pair of games.

The Lady Longhorns defeated North Tahoe 62-19 on Friday and lost 40-27 to Incline on Saturday afternoon and stand at 1-1 in the Division II North and 7-6 overall.

Lady Longhorns crush Lakers

It might have been the long bush trip, but Battle Mountain struggled in the first half, and led 20-12 at the break. It was a much different story in the final 16 minutes, as the Lady Longhorns outscored the Lakers 40-7, including a 19-0 spurt in the fourth quarter.

Riane Schroeder led Battle Mountain with 13 points and dive rebounds and Grace Melver and Sammi Wilson joined her in double figures with 11 and points, respectively.

“The girls started slow and we really did not shoot all that well,” said BMHS coach Paul Tremayne. “Hung in there and got it going in the second half

BMHS falls short at Incline

It appeared Battle Mountain looked poised to leave Lake Tahoe with a sweep. The Lady Longhorns raced out to a 10-4 advantage after the first eight minutes of play and kept it until the fourth quarter.

Battle Mountain led 23-22 after three quarters of action, only to see Incline close out the game on an 18-4 run in the final eight minutes of action.

Yulisa Vazquez paced Battle Mountain with 10 points and Sruti Bhakta added eight points.

“We really played a pretty good game,” Tremayne said. “We struggled a bit on offense and turned the ball over way to much. Their big girl (Kira) Porter dominated the middle and caused us some problem. The girls worked real hard. I think they have found out that we can play with all of the teams in our league. We are real excited to get back from break.”

BMHS rallies to beat Wells

Battle Mountain made its home debut on Tuesday, Dec. 15, in a non-conference game against Wells. The two schools met previously on the season, each winning once. The Lady Longhorns overcame a halftime deficit to beat the Leopards. Battle Mountain outscored Wells 18-8 in the second half.

Bhakta scored 10 points, Schroeder eight and Vazquez seven.

“The press was pretty effective,” added the coach. “We need to continue to work on defense and need to shoot the ball better.”

Battle Mountain returns to the floor on Saturday, Jan. 2, to host West Wendover at 2 p.m.

BMHS JV beats Incline

The Battle Mountain junior varsity girls basketball team defeated Incline 31-24 in its only game of the weekend. North Tahoe does not have a JV team this year.

Drue Domagala scored 10 points and Samantha Broadway had 10 points and five rebounds.

“The JV girls came out and played hard,” Tremayne said. “We were short-handed playing with eight girls. It is nice to see them improving each week.”
