Longhorn boys basketball collects four wins at Comstock Classic

BMHS opens league play this weekend

The Battle Mountain High School boys basketball team made easy work of its road trip to Virginia City last weekend for the Comstock Classic. The Longhorns won all four of their games by 18 points or more as they get ready for the Division III schedule to get under way this weekend in Lake Tahoe.



BMHS crushes McDermitt

Battle Mountain began its stay in the Comstock last Thursday and defeated McDermitt 61-21. Senior guard Blake Dorian outscored the Bulldogs by himself, with 24 points. In addition, he contributed seven steals, four assists and two blocks.

Battle Mountain raced out to a 23-12 lead after a quarter of play and never looked back. The Longhorns held the Bulldogs to nine points in the final three quarters. Battle Mountain outscored McDermitt 24-5 in the second half, and had 11 players score in the contest. Bryan Chavira added seven points and Regan Knight, Miles Piramide, Chris Figueroa, Ryan Bettany and Sadonte Johnson each had four points. Chavira grabbed 12 rebounds, Figueroa added four assists and Johnson two blocks.



Longhorns rally past Leopards

In its first game on Friday, Battle Mountain rallied from a three-point deficit in the first-half to come back and beat Wells 56-38. The Longhorns came out of the halftime break with a 16-2 run and did not trail again.

Dorian posted a double-double with 13 points and 10 steals, while Knight added 10 points. Chavira scored six points and Figueroa had four points, 10 rebounds and six assists, and Piramide had five points and five assists.



BMHS uses quick start to get by Muckers

The night cap on Friday saw Battle Mountain race to an early lead and never relinquished it. The Longhorns used a 22-11 spurt in the in the second quarter and maintained the double-digit lead from there.

Dorian scored a game-high 27 points, off of nine 3-point field goals. He also had three steals. Austin Wallock joined him in double figures with 11 and Piramide and Johnson had six points each. Piramide finished with seven rebounds, Jaren Price and Figueroa had five assists apiece and Knight three blocks.



Longhorns rout Vandals

In the tournament finale against Eureka, Battle Mountain used a quick start to lead by double figures in the first quarter and were never challenged. The Longhorns used a 19-4 run in the fourth quarter to seal the victory.

Dorian and Knight led the Longhorns with 17 and 10 points, respectively, while Piramide added nine points, seven assists and seven rebounds. Dorian and Figueroa had four assists and two steals apiece and Knight and Johnson two blocks each.

“It was a good weekend for us,” said BMHS coach Roger Wallock. “We beat a very good Eureka team and put together our best overall performance against them. Now we have to get ready for league play this weekend making the tough Tahoe trip. After this week, we will have a better idea of where we stand in our division.”

Battle Mountain begins league play this weekend starting Friday at North Tahoe at 6 p.m. The road trip concludes Saturday in Incline at 2 p.m.
