It was no rest for the weary, as the Battle Mountain High School junior varsity boys basketball team notched five wins in a busy week of action last week.
“We’ll end up playing six games in seven days, after our Tuesday game in Wells this week,” said BMHS coach Tyler Samuelson. “To come out and not lose any of the first five is huge. The boys could have easily had a let down in any of the games, but we rose above our exhaustion and played every game with some intensity.”
BMHS rolls past Wells
Battle Mountain played host to Wells on Tuesday, Dec. 8 and came away with a 57-19 win in the non-conference contest. Gabe Naveran led the way with 17 points, Mason Fuller added 12 and Alex Valles eight.
Longhorns perfect at home
This past weekend Battle Mountain hosted a two-day tournament, winning all four games.
The Longhorns began with a 53-24 triumph over Carlin, where Reese Artz and Valles each scored 10 points and Naveran added eight.
Battle Mountain had little trouble with Eureka in the 58-10 win, where Artz outscored the Vandals by two points with 12 in the contest. Fuller scored 10 points and Naveran eight.
Battle Mountain finished a busy Friday off with a 35-24 victory over the Lowry freshmen. In a balanced scoring attack. Fuller led the way with nine and Danny Diaz and Artz each had eight points.
In the only game on Saturday, Battle Mountain cruised to a 57-16 win over Wells. Fuller nearly outscored the Leopards with 15 points, Valles contributed 11 and Naveran eight.
“We were really sluggish in the first half in all three games on Friday,” Samuelson said. “We had to come out in the second half with a lot more energy, so I challenged the team on Saturday to actually start the game with some energy and we did, scoring 38 in the first half which is the most we’ve scored in a half all season. We follow up all these home games in a row with three road games this week, so I’m looking forward to seeing how we do on the road.”
Battle Mountain traveled to Wells on Tuesday and results were not available at press time. The Longhorns start league play this weekend at North Tahoe on Friday at 4:30 p.m. and Incline on Saturday at 12:30 p.m.
