The Battle Mountain High School boys basketball team started its season with four wins in five games at the Serpent Classic last weekend in Hawthorne.

The Longhorns opened with a 49-14 victory over Virginia City on Thursday. Senior Blake Dorian outscored the Muckers by himself with 20 points, including four 3-point field goals. He also had three steals. Miles Piramide joined him in double figures with 13 points. Chris Figueroa grabbed a team-high nine rebounds to go with three assists and three blocks.

Battle Mountain played two games Friday and began with a 68-53 victory over Pahrump Valley of the Division I-A South. Once again, Dorian (26)_ and Piramide (13) paced the Longhorns’ scoring attack. Piramide was one rebound short of a double-double with nine assists. Figueroa had 10 rebounds and eight assists and Dorian finished with two steals.

In Battle Mountain’s second contest on Friday, the Longhorns were knocked off by league rival Yerington 72-51. The Lions led 36-32 at halftime but outscored the Longhorns 36-19 in the second half, including an 18-9 run in the final quarter.

Dorian ended with a team-high 16 points and four steals, while Figueroa added nine points. Sadonte Johnson had six points and Regan Knight four points and six rebounds.

Piramide finished with five assists and three steals and Jaren price had four points and four assists.

Battle Mountain dropped its second game in a row, with a 45-43 loss to Spring Mountain on Saturday morning.

Figueroa posted a double-double with 11 points and 10 rebounds to go with two blocks. Jaren Price had 10 points, Dorian five points, seven rebounds and five assists, and Piramide and Knight had nine and six points, respectively. Johnson added two blocks.

Battle Mountain closed out the tournament with a 58-14 win over Smith Valley, where Dorian outscored the Bulldogs with 19 points. He also had three steals.

Figueroa and Johnson had nine and eight rebounds, respectively and Piramide had four assists and Knight three assists.

“This was a good tournament for us,” said BMHS coach Roger Wallock “We made a lot of mistakes and faced some tough competition. We learned a lot about our team and what we need to work on. “We played Yerington tough for a half, only down four points but then couldn’t make a basket and they are so good that they pulled away from us. We play a lot of games before Christmas and we will need to figure out really quick how to compete with and beat a good team.”

Battle Mountain hosted Wells on Thursday and results were not available at press time. The Longhorns travel to Virginia City this weekend for the Comstock Classic.
