The Battle Mountain High School junior varsity boys basketball team finished third at the Mustang Invitational in Lovelock, winning two of three games.

The Longhorns opened with a 45-36 win over Dayton on Friday. Gabe Naveran, Reese Artz and Mason Fuller each had 11 points.

In the semifinals on Saturday morning, Battle Mountain suffered its first loss in more than a year, suffering a 45-25 loss to Yerington. Naveran had a team-high seven points, while Danny Diaz and Erik Martinez had five points apiece. Fuller ended with four points.

Battle Mountain bounced back in the third-place game to beat Lowry 27-21. Naveran led the Longhorns with 10 points, Artz had eight and Fuller five.

“Overall, it was a good weekend for us,” said BMHS coach Tyler Samuelson. “In the Yerington loss, we realized that we aren’t as untouchable as we were last year, and we have to continue to grow and work hard every game this year. We came from behind in both of our wins and showed that we’re a resilient team that won’t ever give up.”

Battle Mountain hosted Wells on Tuesday and results were not available at press time. The Longhorns are back on their home floor this weekend to host a preseason tournament.
