Editor,
I would like to respond to Tod Story’s letter to the editor of Nov. 24th, entitled “Welcome all immigrants.”
Yes, this is a country made up of immigrants. I am from ancestors that came from Germany, Switzerland and England. Let’s compare the immigrant of 100 years ago and today’s immigrant.
My ancestors entered this country through Ellis Island and stood for days to take the oath of allegiance to America. They worked very hard to provide a better life for the next generation without help or assistance from any government entity. They learned the language to easier assimilate into this country, where every person can enjoy life, liberty and “the pursuit of happiness.” Happiness is not guaranteed. One must achieve their own happiness through reaping the rewards of hard work and selflessness.
In comparison, today’s immigrants expect and demand that this country assimilate to their way of life and provide them with the “happiness” that they feel they deserve, provide them with every government handout available, free medical care, free housing, speak their language in schools, national holidays of their home country, and be allowed to spit and urinate upon the flag of the country that provides these freedoms.
I am not against immigration. I am against illegal immigration that over-burdens the working American taxpayer.
How many more immigrants can be let into this country and be provided for with the current state of our economy, an economy that is on the brink of breaking the back of the American taxpayer, who has to work even harder to provide for our families with an outrageous 28 percent income tax.
America is the land of opportunity with the freedom to pursue happiness. Happiness and prosperity are not given. They must be earned.
