Lowry volleyball, soccer teams get season underway today

Despite school not starting yet in Humboldt County, a handful of Lowry High School sports teams get their season underway this weekend.

The Lady Buckaroo varsity volleyball team is in Yerington today and Saturday for the Yerington Invitational. Lowry plays Coleville at noon, Silver Stage at 3 p.m. and Sparks at 6 p.m. today. The tournament will be broken into a Gold and Silver bracket on Saturday. Among the other teams competing are South Tahoe, Dayton, Elko, Spring Creek, Moapa Valley, Mountain View and Spanish Springs.

The Lowry freshmen and JV volleyball teams are in Truckee on Saturday for a tournament.

The Lowry JV soccer teams are in Spring Creek this week for the Spring Creek Jamboree. The boys are slated to play Battle Mountain and Fernley today at 10 a.m. and 1 p.m., respectively. The Buckaroos will face Spring Creek on Saturday at 2:30 p.m.

The girls squad takes on Elko and West Wendover on Friday at 11:30 a.m. and 2:30 p.m., respectively. Lowry wraps up play on Saturday against Spring Creek at 1 p.m.

The varsity soccer teams will be in Spring Creek on Sept. 4-5 for a two-day tournament. The Lowry girls will play Elko and Fernley on Sept. 4, at 10 a.m. and 11:30 a.m. The boys will meet up with Spring Creek at 11:30 a.m. on Sept. 4.

The Lowry girls golf team opens its season on Wednesday and Thursday in Elko and Spring Creek.

The Lowry football team will be at home this week to play Fernley, starting with the freshmen at 5 p.m. on Thursday. The JV and varsity play on Friday, Sept. 4, at 4:30 p.m. and 7 p.m.

The Lowry cross country team will wait another week to get going, with the Buckaroos traveling to North Tahoe on Sept. 11.

The McDermitt volleyball team hosts Crane, Ore., on Tuesday at 5 p.m. and the Bulldog football team will be at home on Saturday, Sept. 5, to play Pyramid Lake at 1 p.m.
