Battle Mountain high schoolers ready for another sports year

High school football teams in Nevada have been practicing for the last week and half and now its time for the rest of fall sports to jump in.

Volleyball, soccer, girls golf and boys and girls cross country are all underway in Lander County and the rest of Nevada.

The Battle Mountain High School football team will see the first action when the junior varsity and varsity squads travel to Spring Creek for scrimmage on Saturday.

The Longhorns open the regular season on Friday, Aug. 28, against White Pine. The JV contest starts at 4:30 p.m. and the varsity at 7 p.m. Battle Mountain will not see its home field again until Oct. 9 versus Yerington. Rite of Passage was scheduled to play in Battle Mountain, but the school is transitioning from a boys school to a girls school.

Battle Mountain travels to Reno on Friday, Sept. 4, to play Hug of the Division I North.

The first round of the state playoffs begin Friday, Nov. 6, with the state championship set for Nov. 21 in northern Nevada.

The Battle Mountain volleyball team begins its season with a pair of tournaments, starting in Yerington on Aug. 28-29. The Lady Longhorns will be at home Sept. 4-5 for a two-day tournament. Battle Mountains starts Division III North play on Friday, Sept. 11, at West Wendover and they make their home debut for league play on Friday, Sept. 18, against Silver Springs.

The top four teams qualify for the regional championships, which will take place Nov. 6-7. The state championships will be held Nov. 13-14 in Las Vegas.

The Battle Mountain girls soccer team begins its season with the Spring Creek Invitational on Aug 28-29. Both teams travel to Ely for the White Pine Invitational on Sept. 4-5. The soccer teams will spend the first half of the Division III season on the road. The Lady Longhorns host Pershing County on Oct. 2, and the boys are at home on Oct. 7 against Elko.

As it was the case last year, the regional championships will act as the state championships. The tournament will be held in Incline on Nov. 6-7.

The Battle Mountain girls golf team starts its season on Thursday, Aug. 27 in Ely. The Lady Longhorns will host the Division III North on Thursday, Sept. 24.

There is no regional championship, as the state tournament will be held Oct. 7-8 in Ely.
