The BMHS track and field team traveled to Elko on Friday, April 17, to complete in the Ward Coates Invitational hosted by Wells. The team finished the day with 43 career-bests and seven season-bests.
Both teams finished in fourth place, with the boys earning 86 points and the girls earning 50.50 points.
“With great weather, it was a good opportunity for many of our athletes to get back on the track after two weeks off for spring break,” said BMHS coach Stephanie Potter.
Blake Dorian continued his winning ways, placing in all four of his individual events. His best event, the triple jump, featured a two-foot improvement of his previous career best to have the winning leap of 41 feet, 3 inches in his last jump of the day. The jump earned him the new meet record, beating the previous one which was 40-0 by a White Pine athlete from last year and former Longhorn Dylan Annis. The mark also earns him the top spot in Division III this year.
Dorian placed second in the 200 meters, just getting beat at the finishing line, with a career-best time of 24.14 seconds. It was a close finish in the 100-meter dash and Dorian was third with a time of 11.52. He finished the day with a third-place finish in the long jump with a leap of 18-2.50.
Andrew Cox was dominant in the 400 meters once again, with his second first-place honor in the last three weeks, in a time of 55.56. His consistency in the high jump at 5-4, earned him third-place honors. Cox finished fifth in the triple jump with a leap of 36-3. He closed out the day, running the 200 meters in 25.40.
The boys 4x400 relay of Michael Cory, David Chavez, Izaak Stahl and DeAndre Powell were second with a time of 4:05.
Cecilia Leon continued her great season, leading the Lady Longhorns with 11.50 of the teams’ 50.50 points. She had a season-best time of 2:44 in the 800 meters to place third. That time puts her first in the Division III North this season. She also had a career-best time of 6:14 in the 1,600 to finish fifth. She also ran the fastest leg in the third-place 4x400 relay.
“Cecilia continues to lead by example both at practice and at meets,” Potter said.
Ren Avedician continues to lead the Lady Longhorns in the throwing events with a third-place finish in the discus with a throw of 77-10. She also threw the Shot Put 23-3. Potter said that Avedician continues to work hard and shine in the throwing events.
The girls 4x400 relay of Leon, Olivia Price, Catherine Dunlavy and Sammi Wilson were third with a time of 5:13. The girls 4x800 relay of Price, Caitlin Book, Dunlavy and Alexa Goddard ran a 13:30 to finish third.
Price attempted the 300-meter hurdles for the first time and finished fourth in a time of 61.03. She also had a leap of 12-1.50 in the long jump and finished the day running in the 4x400 and 4x800 relays.
“Olivia showed great leadership today,” Potter said.
Goddard tied for fourth place in the high jump with a career-best mark of 4-0. She also had a career-best time of 33.78 in the 200 meters. She was also a part of the third-place 4x800 relay and the seventh-place 4x200 relay.
“Alexa is becoming a solid runner in our relays this year,” added the coach. Cory picked up a fourth-place in the 400 meters with a time of 58.76. He also was part of the fourth-place 4x200 relay and second-place 4x400 relay.
DJ Potter had a career-day in the shot put, finishing fourth and improving his best toss by over three feet for a toss of 39-10. He also threw the discus 102-0 to finish seventh.
The boys 4x100 relay of Dakota Chadwick, Fernando Carrillo, Chavez and Stahl ran a season-best time of 49.65 to place fourth. The boys 4x200 relay of Cory, Chavez, Stahl and Powell were fourth in a time of 1:44.
Regan Knight continued to place in the high jump, with fifth-place honors today at a height of 5-4. He also threw the discus 97-9” and the shot put 31-2.
The boys 4x800 relay of Dillon Thompson, Christian Eusebio, Matt Rochester and Cameron Thompson were fifth in a time of 11:03.
Justin Berumen had another great day in the hurdles with a career-best in the 110-meter hurdles in a time of 20.44 to place sixth. He also added a seventh-place in the 300-meter hurdles with a time of 53.12. He finished the day running a 12.97 in the 100 meters and 27.34 in the 200 meters.
Chris Wilkins continued to surprise everyone in the jumping events by earning career-best in both the triple and long jumps. He was sixth in the triple jump with a leap of 36-2, improving his best by two feet. He placed seventh in the long jump at 16-8. In addition, he ran 65.22 in the 400 meters.
Wayne Piramide led the Lady Longhorns in the jumping events, with a seventh-place finish in the triple jump at 29-9 and she was eighth in the long jump at 12-9.50 to finish eighth. Sarah Mills placed seventh in the high jump with a mark of 4-0. She also had a career-best toss in the shot put of 21-3.75.
Ryan Bettany placed seventh in the 110-meter hurdles with a career-best time of 22.00. He also ran the 200 meters in 29.62 and the 400 meters at 70.12.
Powell continued his improvement in the jumping event, placing seventh in the high jump at 5-0. Powell had a career-best leap of 16-2.50 in the long jump and was part of the second-place 4x400 relay and the fourth-place 4x200 relay.
The girls 4x200 relay of LaRae Tomera, Orion Bean, Hania Amezcua and Goddard ran 2:17 to finish seventh. The girls 4x100 relay of Piramide, Tomera, Justine Jury and Bean ran a time of 62.02 to place eighth.
Battle Mountain competed in Ely last weekend and travels to Winnemucca on Saturday for the Lowry Invitational at 9 a.m.
