WINNEMUCCA - Volunteers joined Friends of Nevada Wilderness and Nevada Outdoor School in the Santa Rosa Range to participate in a stewardship project at Lye Creek Campground.
Youth stewards from Nevada Outdoor School's Summer Adventure Camp II painted picnic tables, sanded and scraped benches in the campground and cut areas of overgrown vegetation.
Friends of Nevada Wilderness and Nevada Outdoor School have teamed up to bring stewardship and education opportunities to northern Nevada youth since 2005.
Nevada Outdoor School's Adventure Camp II ran from July 9 - 14, providing sixth, seventh and eighth graders of Humboldt County an opportunity to make new friends, work as a team, explore outdoor skills and give back to their community.
Campers participated in three days of local programming which included swimming, bowling, a live animal presentation and exploration of the Winnemucca Community Garden. All nine campers then had the opportunity to participate in a two-night campout at Lye Creek Campground in the Santa Rosa Ranger District.
For many of the campers, it was their first exposure to Lye Creek Campground as well as their first stewardship project.
"It was an incredible experience to see the passion of everyone on this project regardless of age. All of the campers were so proud to be making a difference on the campground and their personal contributions were evident, immediately showing what a powerful difference a few volunteers can make," said Brenna Archibald, stewardship project coordinator for Friends of Nevada Wilderness.
"Lye Creek Campground is one of the only developed campgrounds in Humboldt County, so it's important we keep this area maintained," said Wes Hoskins, forest project coordinator for Friends of Nevada Wilderness. "It's great that we can improve Lye Creek and encourage youth stewardship at the same time."
Nevada Outdoor School would like to thank Steve Swecker from the Recreation Department, Dr. Doug Hogan from Great Basin College, the Winnemucca Community Garden, Chad Peters from Spare Time Bowling and Tina Gast from the U.S. Forest Service for helping to make Adventure Camp II a success for all participants.
