LOVELOCK - This is the second of a two-part series that offers a look back at some of the stories and photos featured in the Lovelock Review-Miner during 2011. Today's edition features stories and photos from July to December. Stories and photos from January to June were featured in the Jan. 5 - 11 edition.



July

Relay for Life raised over $27,000 for the American Cancer Society at its overnight event. Lovelock Relay for Life co-chair Valaree Olivas estimated over 500 people attended the event. Eighteen Relay teams and 150 registered team members participated in the event.



Numerous Pershing County agencies responded to the Amtrak train and tractor-trailer accident that happened in Churchill County. Two Lovelock ambulances, one Lovelock rescue truck and one Lovelock fire truck, along with about 12 personnel, responded to the wreck. In addition, one Rye Patch fire truck with an unknown amount of personnel and two Pershing County Sheriff's Office deputies also responded.



Pershing General Hospital is divesting itself of its retail pharmacy and will turn the business over to pharmacist Grant Moulton. Hospital board trustees voted 3-0 June 29 to approve a contract with Moulton.



Unionville held its fifth Fourth of July parade. This year there were over 20 entries in the parade, featuring everything from ATV's to farm tractors, horses, dogs and the Unionville fire truck.



One of the nation's top discount retailers is coming to Lovelock, bringing new development to the downtown core. Mayor Mike Giles announced July 12 at the Lovelock City Council meeting that Family Dollar plans to build an 8,000 square-foot structure at the vacant lot on the corner of Main Street and West Broadway.



A wildfire near Rye Patch burned about 203 acres July 26 before being controlled later that evening, according to the Bureau of Land Management. The BLM said at the time the Rye Patch Fire was the 19th wildfire of the season within the Winnemucca BLM District.



August

Frontier Days attendance and participation was up this year, according to many committee members. In keeping with the theme of this year's event, "Capture your heart at Lovelock Frontier Days," Terry and Betty Gruszka were selected as grand marshals of the 2011 Frontier Days parade because of their love story.



Eagle Picher Minerals held plant-wide barbecues to celebrate and reward their employees for four years without a LTA (loss time accident).



Active mining operations at Coeur's Rochester Mine are well under way, and the resumption is expected to boost silver and gold production in the fourth quarter of the year, the company said.



Lovelock Relay for Life completed it 2011 fundraising year with the Lovelock Triathlon. The race consisted of a 5K (3.1-mile) run out and back down Western Avenue, a 13.5-mile bike ride and a 10.5-lap swim at the Lovelock Pool.



September

Each year the Pershing County School District starts the first day of school with an inspiration to continue throughout the year. This year's welcome back assembly focused on being kind, as inspired by the Josh Stevens Foundation. To further the mission the foundation has printed cards that will be given to students as they are "caught being kind" to someone. The cards include a rubber bracelet with the words "be kind it's the new cool" on it. Teachers and leadership students will be surprising other students with these cards when they are seen being kind to others.



The Imlay Reunion was held over the Labor Day weekend. The reunion started close to 20 years ago as a way to keep former and current residents who worked for the Southern Pacific Railroad in touch with each other.

References to "the good old days" were heard often during the two-day get together, which started Sunday afternoon in the yard of Imlay resident Dolores Montes and ended with a pancake breakfast at the residence of Stan and Janiece Monroe, also of Imlay.



The Rye Patch Volunteer Fire Department held an awards luncheon Sept. 11 at the Humboldt River Ranch Pavilion. The luncheon honored retiring Assistant Fire Chief Jim Ilecki and retiring firefighter Scott Houston, among others.



Last month marked 25 years of continuous production for the Florida Canyon Mine, a feat almost unheard of in the mining industry. The mine opened in 1986 with a life expectancy of three years and the hopes of pulling 200,000 ounces of gold out of the ground. Now 25 years later the mine has poured 2,225,000 ounces, as of last month.



Local hot air balloon pilot Pat Irwin took first place in his hot air balloon named Persistence at the Great Reno Balloon Race, which was held Sept. 9 - 11 at Rancho San Rafael Regional Park in Reno.



Homecoming festivities punctuated the week ending Sept. 23 for Pershing County High School students, culminating with a Saturday night dance at Sturgeons Center Club. During halftime of Friday night's football game seniors Lucas Diarte and Claudia Dennler were crowned Homecoming King and Queen.



October

Located in the Upper Valley near Lovelock, the Double tree Ranch is on the cutting edge of technology in the production of organic produce. Owners John and Carol Shank, in conjunction with SunScience Corporation, are in the midst of an innovative research project utilizing a revolutionary solar energy system. The project is designed to dramatically extend the growing season for year-round planting in green houses and hoop houses.



Pershing County High School senior Erika Terry departed Lovelock for Washington, D.C., in September of last year to be one of a select group of students serving in the Senate while also carrying a full load of coursework.



Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid announced that the County Payments Reauthorization Act of 2011 would fund the Secure Rural Schools and Payments in Lieu of Taxes (PILT) programs for five more years. Both programs reimburse rural counties where tax-exempt federal government agencies manage substantial tracts of land.



A situation that started off as potentially dangerous ended without incident. Pershing County Sheriff's deputies, Humboldt County Sheriff's deputies, the Winnemucca Police Department, Winnemucca SWAT, Nevada Highway Patrol and Humboldt General Hospital Ambulance all responded to a 911 call of shots fired with multiple victims Oct. 24 around 3:20 p.m.

After patrolling the area without incident, Pershing County Sheriff Rich Machado said that contact was made with the 911 caller who was found to be delusional. The man was taken into custody on a mental health hold.



November

It isn't much, but it's a start in the right direction. Pershing General Hospital reported a small profit of just under $3,000 for the month of September, thanks mainly to operations at its nursing home.



Heidi Lusby-Angvick was unanimously selected by the Pershing County Economic Development and Community Center Board as the Pershing County Community Center director and economic development coordinator for Pershing County.



The Sixth Judicial District Court serving Humboldt, Lander and Pershing counties has launched their new website at http://sixthjudicialdistrict.com.

The site is very informative and includes a calendar of court proceedings in each venue as well as information related to the judges and their venues, self-help legal forms, specialty courts, jury duty information and juvenile department information.



The Old Fashioned Saturday Night Jamboree fundraiser held for the Lovelock Animal Shelter brought in $2,273. The money will be used to buy large and small live animal traps and Igloo animal shelters for outside animals at the shelter, Lovelock Animal Control Officer Sheri Crim said.



The Pershing County High School football team won its second consecutive 2A state title, defeating White Pine 47-14.



December

Pershing County Middle School may be producing future journalists from its Publications class. The class taught by middle school teacher Denise Phillips includes the production of a newsletter, "Eye of the Colt," posters announcing the weekly and monthly birthdays of fellow classmates and the production of the school's annual yearbook.



Bill Laird, who has taught welding and agricultural mechanics at Pershing County High School for 19 years, began making string instruments nearly a decade ago. In that time he has put his brand name, "Saltgrass," on 13 instruments. Laird has made guitars, mandolas and mandolins.



Various entities involved with Burning Man discussed proposed changes to the county's festival ordinance and how it would affect the Burning Man event with commissioners during a 6½-hour special Pershing County Commission meeting.

The meeting was provided solely as a workshop for commissioners, the public and Burning Man officials to hash out issues with the proposed ordinances.



Rye Patch Gold can resume exploration activities within the Rochester Mining District, but its employees must steer clear of active mine operations, a district judge ruled Dec. 20.

Coeur Rochester Inc. had asked Sixth Judicial District Judge Mike Montero to issue an injunction that would prevent Rye Patch employees or agents from entering lands inside the mine's Plan of Operations. But the judge narrowed the focus of his temporary order to keep Rye Patch away from the mine's open pit, haul road, heap leach pads and waste rock dump; he also set up buffer zones around each of those areas.

The Nevada Committee on Local Government Finance declined to declare a severe financial emergency that could have led to a state takeover of Pershing General Hospital. Instead, committee members praised hospital officials and employees for implementing their own strategy that has put the facility on the path toward financial stability.
