Wrestlers run away with Kiwanis Invitational

Four Buckaroos claim individual championships

WINNEMUCCA - With one month left in the season, the Lowry High School wrestling team is working on winning its sixth consecutive Division I-A state championship.

After two trips to Reno, one to Idaho and another to central California in the last four weeks, the Buckaroos were closer to home this past weekend at the Kiwanis Invitational in Spring Creek.

Lowry won its sixth consecutive Kiwanis' title, running away with the team competition by nearly 100 points.

The Buckaroos collected 301.50 points, while Reno was second at 204.50. Caldwell, Idaho, was third at 198.50 and Spring Creek and Virgin Valley were fourth and fifth, respectively, with 187 and 160.50 points.

Lowry had seven wrestlers in the finals, with four winning titles. Those included Nate Nelson (126), Eric Brooks (132), Beau Billingsley (170) and Luis Cardenas (285). Brandon Okuma (152), Tytin Johnson (195) and Anthony Hummel (220) were second.

Lowry will head west on Interstate 80 this weekend with the Vaquero Invitational in Fernley on Friday and Saturday.
