Workshop aims to help build sustainable food and agriculture businesses

FALLON - The University of Nevada, Reno Center for Economic Development is offering a workshop on agricultural business plan development. This is the fourth marketing workshop in a series of five to be held through June 2014.

The workshop will be 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., Saturday, March 22, at Western Nevada College's Fallon Campus, 160 Campus Way, Fallon, Nev. Cost is $35 until March 14, and $45 thereafter. Seating is limited, and registration is required and can be done online at www.wnc.edu/sci.

"For producers starting a new business, a well-formed business plan provides a road map to reaching their goals and can help strengthen their overall business," Maggie W. Cowee, food systems analyst with the University Center for Economic Development, said. "During times of economic uncertainty, it is important for experienced producers to revisit their business plan to ensure they are still on track."

During the daylong workshop, featured speaker Marie Gibson will coach students through creating their own business plan as they learn about each element of an agricultural business plan. Over the course of the four weeks following the workshop, Gibson will assign weekly goals to students to help them finish developing their business plan and will be available for one-on-one assistance by email or over the telephone (three hours per student). This class is great for new farmers and ranchers, seasoned veterans looking to try a new enterprise, or anyone who wants to test the feasibility of their food or agriculture-related business idea.
