CARSON CITY - Northern Nevada communities are set to reap the rewards of the Western Nevada State Peace Officer Academy's 2013 graduation class. Twenty-two cadets were honored last week at Western Nevada College.

The 2013 WNC graduating class hails from throughout the region: Carson City, Reno, Fallon, and Sparks.

Cadets graduating with special recognition included: Charlie Evans - Top Gun award; Adam Hall and Kevin Lewis - Top Gun for Emergency Vehicle Operations; Class Valedictorian - Jacqueline Mitcham; Joe Rodriguez - Sharp Shooter Competition Award.

Jason Gault, a detective with the state Department of Public Safety's Investigative Division, addressed the group.

Graduating cadets completed an intensive 30.5 credit law enforcement program that began in January.

Along with the academic requirements of the program, cadets were physically required to make a vertical jump of 16 inches, perform 32 sit-ups in one minute, do 30 push-ups in one minute, run 30 meters in 65 seconds or better, run/walk 1.5 miles in 15:30 or better, and complete the Illinois Agility Run in 18.6 seconds.

They are now qualified to take the Peace Officer Standards and Training Exam.

Five graduating cadets have already landed positions in northern Nevada communities with the Carson City Sheriff's Department; Eureka County Sheriff's Department; Storey County Sheriff's Department, and Winnemucca Police Department.
