WJHS stays perfect with two wins in McDermitt

Warriors play in Tri-County championship

The Winnemucca Junior High School eighth-grade girls basketball team continued its season with a pair of victories in McDermitt last Saturday.

The Warriors used a 13-0 run in the first quarter against Battle Mountain and went on for the 41-23 victory. The Shorthorns cut the deficit to 19-12 at halftime, but the Warriors used a 10-3 spurt in the third quarter to pull away.

"The girls played a good game," said WJHS coach DaraLee Millikan. "There were moments when we looked a little sloppy, but they didn't last long. We had a well-rounded effort from everyone."

Hannah Growcock and Rachel Garrison led Winnemucca with eight points apiece.

"Rachel has a beautiful shot and she's not afraid to shoot," Millikan said. "She has also been working on being more aggressive. It's been nice to see her improvement during the last few weeks. In regards to Hannah, we coaches were noticing how quick she gets there. Whether it's stealing the ball, causing a turnover, recovering after an attempted steal, setting a screen, or just getting back in transition. It's great to see."

Madi McClellan added six points, Sydney Connors five, Hailey Fernandez and Lily Garcia four each and Julie Garcia, Victoria Tirado  and Tatyana Carlson had two points each.

Winnemucca cruised to a 48-19 win in it other game over Pershing County, as Julie Garcia scored a team-high seven points. The Warriors used a 15-2 run in the second quarter to lead 31-7 at halftime.

Carlson and Growcock scored six points apiece, Connors five, Macy Munroe, Rebecca Kuskie, Brooke Hansen, McClellan and Fernandez four each. Lily Garcia and Garrison each had two points.

"It was nice to see Julie hit a few, including a beautiful 3-pointer," Millikan said. "I put Victoria back in during the last two minutes because she was the only one who hadn't scored at that point, but it was not to be. Becca and Tatyana did an excellent job of defense. Macy has again proven she is team-worthy and not just manager-worthy. We got another chance to run our zone defense."

Winnemucca travels to Battle Mountain on Saturday for the Tri-County Championship. The tournament starts at 9 a.m.

"I am sad the season is almost over," Millikan said. "We are 13-0 right now and only have two games left."[[In-content Ad]]
