WJHS seventh graders win two of three

The Winnemucca Junior High School seventh-grade girls stepped out of Tri-County action with three games on the road.

The Warriors traveled to Fernley last Saturday and lost 38-20 to the host school. Sierra Maestrejuan led Winnemucca with six points and Carly Cappellen added four. Fernley only led 16-10 at halftime, but pulled away in the final 12 minutes of action.

"They (Fernley) had a talented, experienced team," said WJHS coach Grant Beatty. "We hung with them in the first, but started slow in the third quarter and never got back in it."

Winnemucca bounced back later in the day with a 24-17 victory over Fallon. Makayla Leveille took care of the ball and scored four points, according to the coach. Maestrejuan led all scorers with eight and Beatty added that Kelcey Cooper ran the point well, pushing the ball up the floor and made a lot happen on both ends of the floor.

Winnemucca was back on the road Tuesday with a trip to Fallon. The Warriors earned their third victory of the season, winning 22-17. The game was tied at halftime, when the Warriors went on a 12-0 run in the third quarter.

The coach noted that Alyssa Gomez played great defense, rebounded well and scored six points. Maestrejaun led all scorers with seven and Bailey Raabe shot the ball well scoring four points at the end of the game to put Fallon away.

The coach added that Ariana Galindo and Julia Rivera played great on defense, causing multiple jump balls and turnovers. Savannah Dalley and Kelcey Smith each played well on offense and defense for the Warriors.[[In-content Ad]]
