WJHS seventh-graders win twice on home floor

The Winnemucca Junior High School seventh-grade girls basketball team gave its home crowd something to cheer about with a pair of victories this past Saturday in Winnemucca.

The Warriors started out with a 29-5 victory over Pershing County.

"The girls played great defense," said WJHS coach Grant Beatty. "They are gaining more and more confidence each week and it is starting to show. Sierra Maestrejuan outscored the Colts by herself and led all scorers with 14 points, including 2-for-2 at the free throw line. The coach added she rebounded well and made some great passes.

Sara Fernandez contributed four points and five other players had two points. Bella Bourquin added two points and has shown improvement defensively around the basket, according to Beatty.

Winnemucca cruised to a 44-2 win its final game, where nine different players reached the scorebook.

"The girls played awesome defense and the half court trap we worked on this week really gave them some trouble," Beatty said.

Hailey Jones paced Winnemucca with 10 points, Maestrejuan had nine and Kelcey Cooper eight.

Carly Cappellen led the way defensively, again, according to the coach with great play on Battle Mountain's point guard. Beatty noted that Arianna Galindo was aggressive on defense, deflecting passes and causing steals and she also scored 4 points. The coach continued by saying that Julie Rivera rebounded well and made some great assists to her teammates.

Winnemucca travels to Fernley on Saturday to play Fernley and Fallon starting at 8:30 a.m.[[In-content Ad]]
