WJHS seventh-graders win three of four games

Warriors play at home Saturday

The Winnemucca Junior High seventh-grade girls basketball team picked up three wins in four games last week.

The Warriors made their home debut on Thursday, Sept. 11, and beat Fallon 25-19. Winnemucca was down by one point after the first quarter but outscored Fallon by seven points in the final 18 minutes.

Sarah Fernandez led Winnemucca with eight points, Sierra Maestrejuan added five and Alyssa Gomez had four. Coach Grant Beatty also noted that Gomez played good post defense.

"The girls showed tremendous improvement from last weeks games," Beatty said. "Makayla (Leveille) played some great defense and Julia (Rivera) really hustled out there and worked hard on both ends of the floor."

Winnemucca traveled to Lovelock on Saturday for Tri-County play. Against host Pershing County, the Warriors won 40-4 as nine girls scored.

Bailey Raabe scored four 4 points and Hailey Jones used her speed to finish with eight. The coach noted that Alyssa Gomez played strong inside and Kelcey Cooper took care of the ball and played point guard very well.

Winnemucca lost 26-24 to McDermitt and Beatty said that McDermitt had some real size and the Warriors had trouble getting the ball inside.

Savannah Dalley led with nine points and was the defensive leader according to the coach. Maestrejuan rebounded the ball well and added eight points.

"It was a tough loss and the girls were disappointed and wanted a rematch right away," Beatty said.

Winnemucca closed out the day with a 31-0 win over Battle Mountain.

Jones and Maestrejuan each had six points. Carly Cappellen had 8 steals for Winnemucca.

"Kelsey (Smith) and Bella (Bourquin) both played hard and helped us on defense," added the coach.
