The Winnemucca Junior High School seventh-grade girls basketball team completed another successful season, winning the Tri-County Championship this past Saturday in Battle Mountain.
The Warriors defeated the host Shorthorns 36-7 and Pershing County 40-9 on their way to winning the crown.
"It was a great way to end a successful season," said WJHS coach Grant Beatty. "The girls improved so much from the start of year, when we were working on basics of a jump stop, pivot feet, dribble and passing drills. At the end of the year we had multiple trapping defenses and really grew into a fast break, up tempo team."
Sierra Maestrejuan, Sarah Fernandez, and Kelcey Cooper were each named to the all-tournament team.
"The girls were like little sponges all season long, anything we threw at them, they soaked it all up," Beatty said. "They practiced hard every single day and had fun doing it. The group of girls are a bunch of comedians and always kept practice light no matter how hard they worked. The season would not have been a success without the help of coaches Jo McClellan and her daughter, coach Kylee McClellan. They each had a tremendous impact on the girls and their development throughout the season. I couldn't have done it without all their help."[[In-content Ad]]
