WINNEMUCCA - The victories keep on coming for the Winnemucca Junior High School eighth-grade girls basketball team.

The Warriors (8-0 overall, 2-0 Tri-County) extended its unbeaten streak to eight games with a pair of wins on Friday, Sept. 21, in Battle Mountain. Winnemucca defeated the host Shorthorns 40-6 and Pershing County 25-17.

"Battle Mountain is down this year and it was a good chance for all the girls to play," said WJHS eighth-grade coach Jack Smith. "We pressed for just a quarter and then took it off. Everything we did looked pretty good. Pershing County gave us another good game and they are getting better."

Winnemucca outscored Battle Mountain 22-1 in the first half and did not give up a field goal on defense. Audrey Snow scored half of the Warriors' 12 points in the first period, with Olivia Silva, Brooklyn Backus and Hannah Hillyer adding two points apiece. Winnemucca picked up scoring from five different players in the second quarter as part of a 10-1 run.

Battle Mountain scored its first field goal of the game in the third period, only to see Winnemucca continue to build its advantage. The Warriors closed out the game with a 12-2 spurt in the fourth quarter.

Hannah Hillyer outscored Battle Mountain by herself with a game-high 10 points. Snow also surpassed the Shorthorns' total with eight points and Lexi Allen finished with six points, all in the fourth quarter. Kenadee Miller and Silva scored four points each and Alyssa Campbell, Tiana Herrera, Jacy Urain and Backus had two points apiece.

Winnemucca started off slow against Pershing County, scoring two points in the first six minutes of play. The Colts had trouble scoring as well, with the Warriors holding them to two first-quarter points.

Brooklyn Waller proved to be the difference in the second quarter, scoring seven points, including a 3-point field goal. She scored all but two of Winnemucca's points in the second period, leading to an 11-6 Warrior advantage at halftime.

Herrera and Backus combined for eight of Winnemucca's 10 points in the third quarter for an eight-point lead and the Warriors were not challenged from there.

"Pershing County is a quick and scrappy bunch of girls," Smith said. "We did not pull away until the third quarter."

Waller finished with a game-high 11 points; Snow and Herrera each scored four points and McKenna Jones, Amaya Herrera and Miller had two points each.

Winnemucca hosts Carson Middle School and Pershing County today at 3 p.m. The Warriors host the Tri-County League Saturday, beginning at 9 a.m.
