Winter sports season under way for local high school teams

The 2014-15 winter sports season officially gets under way with this week for McDermitt and Lowry high schools.

McDermitt opens play at home against Crane, Ore., on Wednesday, with the girls tipping off at 5 p.m., with the boys to follow at 6:30 p.m.

The Bulldogs will be on the road the next day to face Jordan Valley, Ore. Action is set to begin at 4:30 p.m., with the girls contest. The boys are scheduled to play at 6 p.m. Starting times are Mountain time.

All three Lowry girls basketball teams will take to the floor this week in Reno for the High Sierra Classic that takes place Thursday through Saturday.

The Lady Bucks, the defending Division I-A state champion, are scheduled to play Faith Lutheran on Thursday at 4:30 p.m. Lowry will face Carson on Friday at 6 p.m., and play twice on Saturday against Douglas (noon) and Reno (6 p.m.). Reno is the reigning Division I state champion. All games are scheduled for Spanish Springs High School in Sparks.

The JV team will face McQueen on Thursday at 4:30 p.m. The Lady Bucks round out the tournament on Friday and Saturday versus Carson and Spanish Springs, respectively. Both games are set for 4:30 p.m. Once again, all games are set for Spanish Springs High School.

The freshmen squad will play the three same teams the JV does with different starting times. All three contests are set for 3 p.m., at Spanish Springs.

The Lowry varsity boys will make the long trip to Las Vegas this weekend for the Legacy Tip-Off Classic. The Buckaroos will open with Mojave on Thursday at 6:50 p.m. If Lowry wins, it plays the winner of Robert Bateman (Canada) and Centennial at 6:50 p.m. on Friday. If the Buckaroos lose, they will play the loser of that game at 5:25 p.m. on Friday.

Coral Academy, Sierra Vista, Faith Lutheran and Wastach Academy (Utah) are in the same part of the bracket with Lowry.

The Lowry JV boys will be in Lovelock on Friday and Saturday for the Pershing County Tournament. The Buckaroos are set to open with Yerington on Friday at 2 p.m.

The Lowry freshmen boys don't open its season until Friday, Dec., 12, with the Longhorn Invitational in Battle Mountain.

The Lowry wrestling team will look to extend its dual streak of 93, when it travels to Fallon on Saturday for the Fallon Duals. The 93 straight duals won by the Buckaroos is the second most in state history.

The Buckaroo wrestlers will host the Cody Louk Invitational on Friday, Dec. 12, and Saturday, Dec. 13.[[In-content Ad]]
