WINNEMUCCA - In 1922, when this picture was taken, your Sunday roast would most likely have come from here. This picture shows Mrs. Fred Pflum, Sam Thomas, and Fred Pflum. The Pflums operated the business providing Winnemucca with beef and lamb.
In our time, local meat processing has almost disappeared. It was much different in the 1920s. Meat had to be raised, slaughtered and butchered locally. No refrigerated trucks, and refrigerated cars on the railroad were fairly expensive and mostly delivered to large cities.
In rural areas and small towns like Winnemucca, it meant that local people filled that niche.
As you can see on the fence behind the Pflums and Mr. Thomas, the hides were also saved, partially processed and sold. Every bit of the animal that could be used would have been.
An economy dictated by common sense and good business practice. The Pflums worked in this successful business for years before age forced them to retire.
