Silence. That was Kelly Christian's response when she learned she was the winner of a vintage 1965 Ford Mustang.
Thursday, Nov. 6, the Humboldt Volunteer Hospice raffled off the beautiful car as part of a Humboldt County Chamber of Commerce Mixer held at the Frugal Flamingo Thrift Shop.
When HVH staff member Sherry Mock drew Christian's name, there was a moan of disappointment that rippled through the crowd - but not from Christian.
In fact, Humboldt County Chamber of Commerce Vice President Bob Shaw quickly called Christian to let her know the good news, and after her stunned silence, Christian let out a high-pitched "Are you serious? Oh my gosh!"
In all, 500 tickets were sold for the car raffle at $20 each. The car was donated to the organization last year as a way to raise money for local residents suffering from chronic, debilitating or terminal illnesses.
All hospice care is provided at no cost to patients. Families do not need a doctor's referral in order to access hospice services.
The car was re-painted, mechanically examined and declared to be in "excellent condition," according to HVH Executive Director Sherry Smith.
"Our donor wants to remain anonymous," said Smith, "but we want to thank him for his kindness and generosity."
Christian and her grandson Kamren Fisher lost no time in coming down to the Frugal Flamingo Thursday night to see their newfound win for themselves.
"That is fabulous," said Christian upon seeing the car. "I am so happy about this. Wow."
Smith said the fundraiser far exceeded hospice's expectations in terms of money, public response and just the sheer joy of being able to give something so beautiful to a member of the community.
"We are so grateful for all the good this donation has brought to hospice," she said. "It has been a good year."
