Winnemucca State Bank & Trust Co.

WINNEMUCCA - This picture is about 15 years or so after the Winnemucca State Bank and Trust went into receivership and was closed. On Jan. 4, 1932, the State Bank examiner E.J. Seaborn took possession of the bank, effectively closing it.

In the days before the Federal Deposit Insurance Corp., that was a disaster for any of the souls who had money in this bank. They lost it and lost it at the very worst possible time, during the Depression. Some of them, being older, did not recover. Years of careful saving evaporated in an instant, leaving them destitute and dependent on family and friends. Others fought through those hardships. Tough and hard-working, they survived and rebuilt their finances and their businesses.

The building has not been used for its original purpose since then. It has been a movie theater, an armory (pictured), an Elk's lodge, and, most recently, has been restored by the Phillips family.
