WINNEMUCCA - The Winnemucca Junior High School wrestling teams closed out their season on a high note at the Tah-Neva championships in Fallon on Saturday, March 30.
The Warriors' seventh-grade squad claimed the team championship and Quint Bell, who wrestled at 110 pounds, was named one the most outstanding wrestlers.
Winnemucca knocked off Battle Mountain by two points, while Fallon was a distant third. Carson and Fernley rounded out the top five.
G.W. Coleman at 105 pounds, Bell (110) and Seth Duncan (115) claimed first placed for the seventh-grade squad. Taylor Corak (70), A.J. Gonzales (85) and Josiah Chapman (165) all finished second. Cade Bell (80), Bryan Day (95), Colton DeLaMora (100), Lorenzo Matson (115) and Landin Gilman (165) were third and Jesus Duarte (heavyweight) was fourth.
The Winnemucca eighth graders finished in fourth place behind Fallon, Fernley and Carson City.
Conner Starkey (175) was the lone individual champion on the eighth-grade side, while Jackson Brown (130) and Bryan Ramos (heavyweight) were second. Austin Robinson (110), and Seth Scott (heavyweight) placed third and Ryan Johnson (105) was fourth.
"We were short in numbers on the eighth-grade team, but I see some potential in this group," said WJHS head coach John Brooks. "I hope this solid showing will keep them coming back."
