WINNEMUCCA - The Winnemucca Junior High School seventh-grade girls basketball team kept its perfect season intact with two wins this past Saturday in Tri-County League play in McDermitt.
The Warriors (10-0 overall) knocked off Battle Mountain 43-15 and Pershing County 46-2.
WJHS head coach Larry Renteria noted that Battle Mountain kept the game close through a quarter of play, but the Warriors pulled away in the second quarter on the strength of an 18-3 run.
"It was a difficult because the girls could not find the basket," said Renteria. "Even though they could not find the basket, they rebounded extremely good and played great defense. Defense really kept them in the game until they could get some baskets to fall."
Sydney Connors and Julisa Garcia led Winnemucca with 11 and 10 points, respectively. Brooke Hanson contributed eight points, Rebecca Kuskie six and Tatyana Carlson, Hailey Fernandez and Madison McClellan each had two points.
"Again, the defense was a game changer as many of the baskets came from steals and fast break opportunities," added the coach.
"Rebounding was crucial, giving us two, three, and four opportunities to score. In general, it was great team basketball. No one individual took over, but just a solid team effort on defense and on the glass. Without the defensive team effort and the effort on the glass this would have been a very different game. I was very proud of the girls for keeping their focus and not giving up on themselves. Their attitude stayed good and their efforts were strong."
In the win over Pershing County, nine different players scored for Winnemucca in the victory.
Kuskie and Hannah Growcock reached double figures with 12 and 11 points, respectively. Lili Garcia added seven points, Fernandez and McClellan scored four points each and Rachel Garrison, Julisa Garcia, Connors and Hanson finished with two points apiece.
"They were good games, and a great weekend of basketball," Renteria said. "In the Pershing County game all the girls saw considerable playing time and were really able to use the opportunity to work on their set offenses."
Winnemucca travels to Battle Mountain today for the third round of Tri-County play beginning at 10 a.m. The Warriors travel to Dayton on Saturday to play Silver Stage and Dayton, beginning at 11 a.m.
