WINNEMUCCA - The Winnemucca Junior High School seventh-grade boys basketball team was busy last week with six games in a three-day stretch.
The Warriors picked up one victory in the span, a three-point defeat of Pershing County.
Winnemucca (2-6) played host to Fallon and Battle Mountain on Thursday, Nov. 8, at Lowry High School. The Warriors lost 35-20 to the Greenwave and 39-30 to the Shorthorns in triple overtime.
Winnemucca was back on its home floor on Friday, Nov. 9, and lost 40-14 to Carson, while coming back to beat Pershing County 27-24.
The Warriors hit the road this past Saturday for Fernley and lost 39-25 to Fernley and 35-24 to Fallon.
Against Fallon in Winnemucca, the Greenwave opened up a seven-point lead at halftime after the game was tied 2-2 in the first quarter. Fallon outscored Winnemucca 16-9 in the second quarter to lead 18-11 at halftime.
The Warriors trimmed the deficit to five points at the start of the fourth quarter, behind four, third-quarter points by Brayden Jensen. Domonick Solis, Peyton Capellen and Steven Bosch each had two points in the period as well.
However, the Fallon advantage remained at five as both teams each scored nine points in the fourth quarter.
Bosch and Jensen led Winnemucca with nine and eight points, respectively. Capellen finished with five, Solis four and Nathan Blanco and Cole Smith each had two points.
The nightcap on Thursday, Nov. 8, proved to be an exciting one with three overtimes needed to determine the outcome.
Neither Winnemucca or Battle Mountain made a field goal in the first quarter, with Jensen making two free throws to give the Warriors a 2-1 lead.
Smith hit the first field goal of the game a minute into the second quarter to increase Winnemucca's lead to 4-1. However, the Shorthorns responded with 10 straight points to go out in front 11-4. Solis stopped the run with a basket late in the first half.
Winnemucca used six points from Bosch in the third quarter to cut the Battle Mountain deficit to a point at 14-13. The Shorthorns maintained the advantage, until Nathan Kepler put back a missed shot with 10 seconds to play to send the game into overtime at 20-20.
The first extra period went scoreless. Winnemucca took a 23-20 advantage in the second overtime on a 3-point field goal. With the game tied at 27-27, Winnemucca was called for a technical foul for having six players on the floor. Battle Mountain made one of the two foul shots, then added a field goal to lead 30-27. The excitement wasn't done, as Solis hit a 3-point shot at the buzzer to send the game into a third extra period.
Battle Mountain dominated the third overtime, outscoring Winnemucca 9-0 to slip away with the victory.
Jensen and Solis led the Warriors with seven points apiece, Bosch added six, Kepler five, Smith and Capellen three each and Ren Mattson two.
In the loss to Carson, the Solons scored 12 points in each of the first two quarters to build a 24-8 advantage at halftime. Winnemucca was held scoreless in the third quarter but came back to score three baskets in the final six minutes of play.
Mattson scored four points and Seth Duncan, Smith, Capellen, Bosch and Jensen each scored two.
Winnemucca led from the start against Pershing County, never relinquishing its advantage. Capellen scored four of the Warriors' five points in the first quarter and Jensen added six points in the final three periods to keep the Colts at bay.
Ty Brown had four points for Winnemucca, Bosch added three and Blanco, Smith, Braden Thomas, Kepler and Mattson each finished with two points.
On Saturday, Fernley jumped out to a 10-6 lead after the first quarter, forcing Winnemucca to play from behind the rest of the way.
The Warriors trailed by five points at halftime but Fernley went on a 10-5 run in the third quarter and the margin never dropped below double digits the rest of the way.
Jensen finished with 13 points, while Blanco, Smith, Solis, Capellen, Brown and Mattson had two points apiece.
The busy weekend came to an end on Saturday afternoon with Fallon using a 14-8 run in the second quarter to break open a one-point advantage.
The Greenwave lead reached double figures in the second half and the Warriors were not able to cut the deficit below nine points.
Bosch had a team-high 10 points, Brown added eight and Capellen and Jensen each had two points.
The Warriors travel to McDermitt today for the first round of Tri-County play at 10 a.m. Winnemucca returns home on Saturday to face Eagle Valley and Pershing County at noon at the high school.
