Winnemucca Little League hosts MLB Pitch, Hit and Run competition

WINNEMUCCA - Youngsters from Winnemucca converged on the Major Field on Saturday for the Major League Baseball Pitch, Hit and Run competition.

Pitch, Hit and Run is the official skills competition of Major League Baseball. This grassroots program is designed to provide youngsters with an opportunity to compete free of charge in a competition that recognizes individual excellence on core baseball/softball skills.

Boys and girls were divided into four age divisions, 7-8, 9-10, 11-12 and 13-14, and have the opportunity to advance through four levels of competition, including team championships at Major League ballparks and the national finals at the 2013 MLB All-Star game at Citi Field in New York City.

In the 7-to-8-year-old division, Aiden Gilman won the pitch portion of the event, hitting two of six targets. Logan Fettic had the longest hit - 64 feet, and Adam Brooks ran the bases in the quickest time at 12.86 seconds. Gilman was the overall winner in the division.

Garrett Linnell was first in pitching in the 9-to-10-year-old division, hitting three of six targets. Garette Hinshaw had the best hit at 122 feet and Anthony Hemp was the quickest on the bases with a time of 10.51. Linnell was the overall winner.

In the 11-to-12-year-old division, Ridge Ricketts won both the hitting and pitching contests. Ricketts hit all six targets in the pitching competition and he had a hit of 166 feet. Tyler Neu led the way on the bases, timing in at 10.15. Ricketts claimed the overall title.

Destiny Linnell won the girls 13-to-14-year-old division. She hit three of six targets in the pitching portion of the event. Linnell had a hit of 43 feet and a time of 7.67 running the bases.

In the boys 13-to-14-year-old division, Carlos Garcia hit four of six targets in the pitching portion of the competition. Anthony Barber had the longest hit at 148 feet and Landin Gilman had a best time of 9.83 seconds on the bases. Garcia was the overall winner in the division.

The individual pitching, hitting and running champions, along with the all-around winner in each age and gender at the local competition, advance to the sectional level in Reno on Saturday, May 11.[[In-content Ad]]
