It's a "first" for the Winnemucca Motocross Club, hosting the Sierra Motocross Racing Association Winnemucca Triple Crown Race. The first two races will be held this weekend, Aug. 29 - 31 and 31 at the Winnemucca motocross track five miles out on Jungo Road. The third race in the series will be held the weekend of Oct. 10 - 12.
Winnemucca Motocross Club president Demo Herrera said the club saw an opportunity when none of the other motocross tracks sponsored a series race this fall and decided to organize the Winnemucca Triple Crown Race.
Herrera said they know they're the furthest track out, so they're trying to keep the gate charges low to draw the riders from other clubs in Fernley, Stead, and Hawthorne Nevada, as well as those from Honey Lake, Calif., (located between Reno and Susanville).
The other tracks have a gate charge of $10 for each practice and race date. The Winnemucca Motocross club won't charge for practice day and the gate charge for races is just $5.
Herrera, whose whole family races, said the costs to take a wife and four kids for a weekend of racing can be fairly daunting, and he thinks the other motocross enthusiasts will be excited about a couple of less expensive race weekends in Winnemucca.
The club approached the Winnemucca Convention and Visitors Authority with a request for $3,000 to pay for prizes they'll give series winners. The WCVA board voted unanimously to support the events.
Since the triple crown race is brand new, the club will be sending out 1,000 fliers to Sierra Motocross Racing Association members. Members of the association all have to have a racing card; they give their addresses to get the cards and the fliers will be sent to those addresses.
Friday, Aug. 29 will be a practice session on the track with races scheduled on both Saturday and Sunday. Both Friday and Saturday, Oct. 10 and 11 will be practice opportunities with the third race in the Winnemucca Triple Crown series scheduled Sunday, Oct. 12.
