WINNEMUCCA - The Winnemucca Host Lions Club is gearing up for their annual District 46 Lions Student Speakers Contest to be held Feb. 1, 2012, according to Judge Gene Wambolt of the Union Township Justice Court and a Lions member.
Humboldt County high school students are chosen by their respective schools to participate in the contest. All students from grades nine through 12 are eligible.
The coming year's contest subject is "Nuclear Power - Safe or Too Dangerous." The student can speak for up to 10 minutes but no less than five minutes on the subject. Speakers will be judged in the areas of text or thought content, delivery and the overall effectiveness of the effort.
The winner of the club contest will receive a $75 check and the other contestants will receive a $25 check. The club contest winner will go on to compete in the Lions zone contest and if successful move on to the regional contest. The regional winner will advance to the District 46 level contest to be held on April 1, 2012, in Reno. A $1,000 scholarship will be awarded to the regional contest winner and a $4,000 scholarship to the District 46 level contest winner.
The club contest will be held at the Humboldt County Library at 7 p.m. on Feb. 1, 2012, and the public is invited to attend.[[In-content Ad]]
