WINNEMUCCA - The Winnemucca Grammar School is selling a labor of love: a cookbook that includes recipes from past and present teachers, administrators, staff members and parents.
"This really was a labor of love," said Nancy Swindle, a second-grade teacher at the school who spearheaded the cookbook project on behalf of the school's Parent-Teacher Organization, the FROGS.
"We began this process 10 years ago and, over the past decade, we just continued to collect recipes and gather more information," said Swindle.
"When we decided it was time to publish, we had a great compilation of names and recipes that I know the community will love."
Swindle said the cookbook will make a wonderful gift for Mother's Day.
"I think it would be a great gift for local residents, especially those who have attended or worked at the school. They will recognize many of the names inside," she said.
She said the cookbook is also a fun gift for relatives and friends outside the community who may be interested in the history of Winnemucca's most historic school.
The original Winnemucca Grammar School has been in existence for more than 100 years and served as Humboldt County's first high school. The school is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
The cookbook includes recipes for main dishes, side dishes, salads, desserts and more.
Swindle said the variety in the book makes it a good purchase; the history behind it gives it an added element of fun.
Cookbooks are $10 each. To purchase your copy, call Winnemucca Grammar School at (775) 623-5222 or simply drop by at 522 Lay Street Monday through Friday between the hours of 8 a.m. and 3:30 p.m. The school accepts cash and checks made payable to "WGS FROGS."
