WINNEMUCCA - It's 1937 and a very important link for Winnemucca is being created, Highway 95. This is the overpass portion with the Western Pacific depot to the left.
There's nothing much on either side of the river on the right - willows, pasture, and across the river, construction equipment. In a few weeks that changed as they started construction of the bridge portion.
Highway 95 changed travel north completely. It went from an unmaintained, dusty, miserably long ordeal, to something that was pleasant by comparison. No dust, or very little, and a smooth ride on pavement. Not to mention how it shortened travel time!
Once completed, Boise could be reached in a day. Prior to that you might do it quicker, but most people took at least two and sometimes three days to reach that city.
All these improvements started there with that overpass. Today the overpass has been reconstructed, but the route remains essentially the same.
