Winnemucca eighth-graders notch three wins in McDermitt

Warriors stay undefeated on the season

WINNEMUCCA - The Winnemucca Junior High School eighth-grade girls basketball team continued its dominance of the Tri-County League with three wins this past Saturday in McDermitt.

The Warriors (10-0 overall) defeated Pershing County 35-16, Battle Mountain 33-9 and McDermitt 41-14.

Winnemucca eighth-grade coach Jack Smith said the team had trouble finding the basket in the matchup with Pershing County, but that Alyssa Kuskie stepped up for the Warriors.

Kuskie scored 10 of Winnemucca's 12 first-quarter points in helping build a 12-4 advantage. The Warriors led 20-7 at halftime and cruised to the victory from there. Kuskie led all scorers with 19 points and outscored the Colts by herself.

"As a team we were ice-cold shooting," Smith said. "We had some other players start chipping in, but Alyssa led the way for us. Pershing County has a real good point guard and we kept her off her game with the press most of the game."

Winnemucca raced out to a 27-6 lead at halftime against Battle Mountain and the coach said it was a game that all the players got a lot of playing time.

The Warriors did most of their damage in the McDermitt game in the first half, scoring 35 points against the Cougars. Kuskie once again led Winnemucca with 18 points, including 10 in the second quarter.

"It was a very physical game," Smith said. "We kind of got beat up a little bit but we made more baskets then they did."

Winnemucca travels to Battle Mountain today for the third round of Tri-County play beginning at 10 a.m. The Warriors travel to Dayton on Saturday to play Silver Stage and Dayton, beginning at 11 a.m.

"Right now, we are sharing the ball, working as a team, pressing real well and playing good team half-court defense," Smith said. "We are all enjoying the journey of the short junior high season."
