WINNEMUCCA - It seems nothing is going to stand in the way of the Winnemucca Junior High School eighth-grade boys basketball team as it looks to capture the Tri-County championship.

The Warriors (11-5 overall, 6-0 Tri-County) made easy work of Pershing County and Battle Mountain Saturday at home, winning 36-21 and 45-23, respectively. Winnemucca is perfect in league play and has won nine of its last 10 games.

"We have a tough game with Fallon on Tuesday and then the one game on Friday for the Tri-County championship," said WJHS eighth-grade coach K.C. Kracaw. "We played Fallon earlier in the year, but we have improved from that time. I am interested in how we will play."

Pershing County had no answer for Winnemucca's Jacob Hernandez as he scored nine points in the first quarter, helping the Warriors build an 11-1 lead in the first quarter. Jed Teichert had the other two points in the first period, with Winnemucca scoring the first seven points of the game.

Teichert added nine points in the second quarter, including the first six, as the Warriors built a 21-2 advantage before settling for a 25-4 halftime lead.

Pershing County made it interesting in the third quarter, connecting on four 3-point field goals to cut the deficit to 27-17. However, that was as close as the Colts got.

Teichert and Hernandez led all scorers with 13 and 11 points, respectively. Brady Lange added four points, Bryan Ramos three, Canyon Ricketts and Donavyn Morris two each and Joe Taylor one.

Winnemucca used four points from Hernandez and a 3-point field goal by Taylor to build a 9-3 advantage over Battle Mountain in the first quarter. Taylor went on to add three more shots from long distance, finishing with a game-high 18 points.

The Shorthorns hung tough with the Warriors for three quarters, when Winnemucca put the game away with a 13-0 run in the final six minutes of play.

Hernandez added nine points, Teichert six, Lange four and Garrett Gray, Ricketts and Ramos two each.

Winnemucca travels to Fallon today and will play after the seventh-grade game that starts at 3:15 p.m. The Warriors close out their season on Friday in Lovelock with the Tri-County championships at Pershing County High School. Winnemucca will play the winner of Battle Mountain and Pershing County for the title.
