Winnemucca Domestic Violence Services (WDVS) welcomes October as National Domestic Violence Awareness Month: Mourn, celebrate, connect!

WINNEMUCCA - WDVS welcomes October as National Domestic Violence Awareness Month. According to the U.S. Department of Justice, one in four women will be the victim of domestic violence at some point in her lifetime, and on average, three women are killed every day at the hands of a current or former intimate partner.

"This year we will be honoring the memory of those that have lost their lives in Humboldt County and celebrating our survivors and families at our candlelight vigil," stated WDVS Executive Director JoAnn Casalez.

The economic downturn is having a devastating effect on local programs working to serve survivors of abuse. While a bad economy does not cause domestic violence, it can make it worse. At the same time, there are fewer options for survivors to escape. According to the National Network to End Domestic Violence, 82 percent of local programs saw an increase the demand for their services, while 77 percent reported a decrease in funding.

"Although WDVS has been faced with state and federal budget cuts, we have been fortunate to be blessed by the Newmont employees and Newmont through the Legacy fund, which helped fill the gap. In addition, several community members, businesses and organizations have blessed WDVS with generous donations." Casalez added. "This generosity has allowed WDVS to continue providing needed services to those victimized by domestic violence, sexual assault, and child abuse, beyond sheltering."

In 2009 WDVS provided services to 90 women, one man, 97 children and provided 220 emergency bed nights. In 2010 those numbers increased to 115 women, eight men, 169 children and 579 emergency bed nights.

Throughout October, communities across the country will mourn for those whose lives were taken by domestic violence, celebrate the tremendous progress victim advocates have made over the years and connect with one another with a true sense of unity to end domestic violence.
